Bird Fest

Celebrate 200 years of bird discovery. Meet a real ornithologist, view tables of specimens, listen to bird experts, watch bird-skinning, identify local birds, participate in bird-banding, and design your own binoculars to take home.

Bird Skinning
Watch our ornithologists prepare specimens for the collections. Yes, there will be skinning.

Free Flight Bird Show
Birds fly—indoors!—in this show by the Animal Behavior and Conservation Connection LLC. Find them on Facebook.

Bird Banding
Find out about the why and how of bird banding. You can also experience it from the bird’s point-of-view.

VIREO Station
See the highlights of the Academy’s vast bird photography collection. This is also a great opportunity to get help identifying birds.

Ornithology Field Work
Academy ornithologist Dr. Nate Rice will talk about life in the field. 3:30 pm

Peregrines in Pennsylvania
Art McMorris will talk about his conservation work with Pennsylvania’s Peregrine Falcons. 12:30 pm

Guest Exhibitors
Join the Delaware Valley Ornithology Club, Pennsylvania Audubon, the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove, The Historical Society of Haddonfield and Haddonfield High School.

Bird Artists
Watch Dana and Alex Cohen create bird illustrations.

Extinct and Endangered
See Academy specimens of species that are endangered or extinct, including the Carolina parakeet, passenger pigeon, heath hen, and Arctic curlew.

Using Feathers to Track Ospreys
The Academy studies ospreys by analyzing their feathers. Environmental scientist Paula Zelanko will explain how.

Binocular Crafts
Decorate a pair of binoculars to take home.

Mist Nets and Bird Banding
Check out the ornithologist’s tools of the trade.
