Tour the Mineralogy Collection

April 9, 2012

flourites from the mineralogy collection

This April, follow scientists into the Academy’s mineral vault to view rarely seen natural groups of crystals in all colors, shapes, and sizes. The Academy’s Mineralogy Collection consists of about 9,000 rare and incredibly beautiful specimens from classic mineral localities in Europe and North America. The collection houses important specimens from the 1800s as well as the oldest intact mineral collection in the Americas, which includes the first objects acquired by the Academy at the time of its founding 200 years ago. Visitors can watch as Academy staff rehouse each specimen in new, stable steel cabinets to keep these specimens in top condition. » More
