Postdoctoral Fellowship, Macroinvertebrate Ecology of Mongolian Streams and Rivers

(Position Announcement # 989)

Issue Date: March 19, 2009
Closing Date: Open until filled.

The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia announces a postdoctoral fellowship in the Mongolian Aquatic Insect Survey Project (MAIS) (clade.ansp.org/entomology/mongolia ). Funding is provided through the National Science Foundation and The Academy of Natural Sciences, with possible extension at the Academy if funding is available. This postdoctoral fellowship provides the opportunity to focus on the analysis of our extensive semi-quantitative and qualitative data from the 2003-2006 Selenge Basin surveys, also known as the Selenge River Project (SRP), and the current Mongolian Altai surveys. It will also entail the development of criteria from these analyses needed for using insect distributions in monitoring water quality. The postdoctoral scientist is expected to participate in field sampling in summer 2009 as part of an international team of scientists. In addition, the postdoctoral scientist will work with our close partners in the Mongolian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMH), to train their staff in use of these criteria. The IMH is mandated to conduct biological monitoring of streams in Mongolia.

The objective for this postdoctoral fellowship is to complete a biological assessment of streams in the Selenge River watershed for use by the MAIS team and the IMH in planning future biological assessment and monitoring of Mongolia’s streams. To achieve this objective the postdoctoral fellow must meet the following goals:

Achieving the objective and goals for this postdoctoral fellowship will yield the following expected outcomes:

Required Education and Skills:

The postdoctoral scientist will be located in Philadelphia, in the Academy’s Entomology department, with office and lab space, and access to the Academy’s specimen collections, library, molecular laboratory and digital imaging center. The Postdoctoral Scientist will have Academy colleagues ranging from evolutionary biologists to applied aquatic ecologists. This Mongolian project is part of a larger research effort in Asia by Academy scientists (asia.ansp.org/).

Salary:
$38,000 plus Academy benefits (12 month appointment). Depending on the incumbent’s qualifications and experience, and funding availability, there is a possibility that, upon completion of the postdoctoral appointment, the incumbent could assume a full time position at the Academy in the Patrick Center (see www.ansp.org/research/pcer/).

To apply:
Send CV, statement of research interests and experience and the names and email address of three references to: . Position number 989 must appear in the subject line.

The Chaplin Postdoctoral Fellowship for the study of Caribbean Fish Diversity and Conservation

(Position announcement #984)

Issue Date: December 18, 2008
Closing Date: open until filled

The Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (ANSP) in collaboration with the Global Marine Species Assessment (www.sci.odu.edu/gmsa/) announce a postdoctoral fellowship position in marine ichthyology to begin in 2009 and named for the Charles and Gordon Chaplin family. Past work in the Bahamas undertaken by the Chaplin family and Academy scientists has produced uniquely important specimen collections, field notes, photographs and films, books and journal publications that document the marine life of the Bahamas as it was a half-century ago. The Chaplin Postdoctoral Fellowship provides an opportunity to further document and understand faunal and habitat change in the Caribbean region. Conservation International (CI) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) launched a Global Marine Species Assessment in 2005. A primary goal of GMSA is to complete IUCN Red List Assessments (RLAs) of all marine vertebrates.

The Chaplin Fellow will coordinate collection of data relevant to RLAs for Caribbean shore fishes and compilation of this information in the IUCN Species Information System. The fellow will refine species distribution information through original museum collection-based research, literature search, and consultation with relevant taxonomic experts. The fellow will also participate in fund raising, coordinate and help complete three RLA 5-day workshops on approximately 1,800 Caribbean fish species. Opportunities will be available to conduct self-selected taxonomic revisions of Caribbean shore fish taxa and to conduct targeted field collections that will improve knowledge of distributions and abundance of Caribbean fishes for the purpose of reducing Data Deficient RLAs.

Required Education and Skills:

The Chaplin Fellow will be posted in the Ichthyology Department at ANSP (www.ansp.org/research/biodiv/ichthyology). The Academy will provide the Chaplin Fellow with office and lab space, access to specimen collections and their databases, the library, molecular lab and imaging center. The incumbent will have the benefit of professional and governmental contacts in the Bahamas that were forged by Gordon Chaplin, Academy scientists and the GMSA.

Salary is $39,000 plus Academy benefits (12-month appointment) plus a research stipend from GMSA. The position is renewable for at least four years based on satisfactory performance.

To Apply:
Send CV, statement of research interests and experience and the names and email addresses of three references to: . Position number 984 must appear in the subject line.

Position is open until filled, but we anticipate reviewing applications beginning on February 15, 2009.

Contact Dr. John Lundberg () or Dr. Kent Carpenter () for further information.

Stream Ecologist

(Position announcement #982)

Issue date: November 20, 2008

The Patrick Center for Environmental Research at The Academy of Natural Sciences invites applications for a career-track, research position available immediately.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in ecology, with expertise in benthic invertebrate ecology. A focus on the use of benthic macroinvertebrates as indices of water quality, as well as aspects of secondary production and linkages between trophic levels, is desirable. Focus on nutrient and microbial biogeochemistry and algal benthic ecology will also be considered. Candidates are expected to carry out innovative and insightful research, and communicate the results to academic, technical, and popular audiences.

Applicants should have a proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) and have sound research skills, especially statistics, demonstrated by a track record of published research and grantsmanship. Applicants are expected to build an externally-funded research program and participate in multidisciplinary studies with other Patrick Center scientists. Applications from established researchers are also encouraged.

Patrick Center scientists conduct studies on freshwater systems and estuaries, with emphases on (1) biogeochemistry; (2) physiological, population, community, and ecosystem ecology; (3) ecological assessment; (4) watershed science and management; (5) and ecological restoration. These studies examine how complex ecosystems, urban and non-urban, work and are used to develop solutions to real-world environmental problems, especially in urban/urbanizing watersheds.

The researcher will work as a part of this team, studying the responses of stream ecosystems to urban and rural land-use pressures. The results of future studies will enhance the effectiveness of current watershed and stream management strategies. This is an opportunity for the appointee to explore fundamental stream ecosystem processes and develop enhanced management strategies for environmental issues of widespread importance.

Review of applications will begin February 28, 2009, and continue until the position is filled. The Academy of Natural Sciences is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Minorities and veterans are encouraged to apply.
