Curatorial Assistant

Summary: 
This position involves responsibility for the curation of cryptogams in the type and special collections of the Botany Department of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Specimens date from the early 1800s to the present and include fungi, lichens, bryophytes, algae. All specimens will be imaged and included in JSTOR Plant Sciences, a global digital archive of scientifically important plant specimens, plants.jstor.org.

Duties:

  • Hands-on care of botanical specimens including archival re-housing of specimens.
  • Use of relational database to computerize specimen records.
  • Preparing shipments of specimens for photography and re-filing returned specimens.
  • Other related projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • College degree in biology, museum studies, or related field preferred. In rare cases, experience may be adequate substitute.
  • Experience working with museum collections preferred; familiarity with computers and database programs desirable. Good organizational skills and attention to details; ability to work independently.

Physical/Working Conditions:
Typical office and lab conditions; regular carrying of boxes, bending and stretching to reach shelves.

Director of Individual Giving

Position Description:
The Academy of Natural Sciences seeks an energetic, goal-oriented Director of Individual Giving. Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Director of Individual Giving is responsible for the development, marketing and implementation of the Museum's annual upper level giving program, the Leadership Circles of Giving, and for growing the Academy’s Annual Fund. The ideal candidate will function as a highly involved member of the Academy's fast moving Institutional Advancement team and will lead the Academy’s individual fundraising efforts by utilizing team work, a strong work ethic, and good constituent relationships that will result in high donor retention and increased individual gifts. 

The successful candidate will have a proven track record for growing and maintaining a successful individual giving program, experience with major donor cultivation and a minimum of 5-6 years of development experience. The ability to meet deadlines, multi-task, and work effectively as part of a team is critical.  Prior experience in a museum setting is a plus.

Duties:

  • Strategically manage the Academy’s upper-level giving program, the Leadership Circles of Giving, for continued growth, including new donor acquisition, current donor renewals, lapsed donor reactivations, online presence, collateral development, and outreach campaigns.
  • Strategically manage the Academy’s Annual Fund campaign for new, current, and lapsed donors, including direct mail and e-mail donor solicitation, acknowledgments, and donor fulfillment.
  • Oversee Leadership Circle recognition, fulfillment, and cultivation programs, including cultivation mailings, in-person visits, donor tours, and telephone calls. 
  • Work with other members of the Institutional Advancement staff and across the Academy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donor prospects and convert members into Annual Fund donors.
  • Develop and implement a moves management strategy to increase donor base and move prospects from membership into Annual Fund donors, Leadership Circles, and major/principal gifts levels.
  • Maintain and manage annual income and expense budget.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments to advance development goals.
  • Work with Finance Department, Development Assistant, and the Membership Manager to ensure accuracy of donor financial records.
  • Produce regular income and donor analytic reports.
  • Together with Development Assistant, manage acknowledgment and fulfillment process for Annual Fund and Leadership Circle donors.
  • Coordinate donor receptions and events together with the Manager for Events and Contributions.
  • Assist with staffing Board Development Committee meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with Academy and Drexel Institutional Advancement staff to reach targeted goals.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Skills and Specifications:

  • Demonstrated success in overseeing an annual giving program.
  • Prior experience in major gifts or upper-level giving program management.
  • Minimum of 5-6 years’ experience in development.
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, interpersonal, written, and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from various departments, and work effectively both as a team member and independently on projects.
  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge software (or similar system).
  • Detail-oriented with ability to meet deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree is required.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Academy Explorers Camp Assistant

Summary:
Assistants will be a part of the Academy Explorers Camp program. Each Assistant will help the group Leaders with instruction and caretaker duties for a group of campers of various ages.

Range of Duties:

  • With group Leader, responsible for the safety and well-being of a group of about
  • 7-15 campers both in the museum and on weekly field trips
  • Assist implementation of natural history lessons for a range of campers
  •  Actively engage campers in learning science
  •  Some weekend/evening work required
  •  Work cooperatively with a diverse museum education/camp staff
  •  Must commit to 6 of 7 weeks of camp (All camp staff is required to attend
  • training July 2-6)
  •  Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

  • All applicants must pass Child Abuse Clearance and Criminal Background Checks
  • Must have a minimum of two years experience in similar setting
  • Strong background in the natural sciences.
  • Experience with children of all ages, preferably in an informal education setting
  • Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision
  • First Aid/CPR training strongly recommended
