Session 1: Why merge science and literacy? (January 28th, 2008)
Why should science teachers spend valuable time communicating literacy strategies to their students? In what ways will science learning benefit by doing so? Discover the rationale behind merging science and literacy in the classroom and ways this can be done without sacrificing science instruction time.
Session 2: Reading and understanding science (February 20th)
Are your students having trouble grasping science concepts due to poor reading skills? Do they have difficulty understanding text material? This workshop is designed to aid in teaching students techniques that will help them understand science text and other related materials.
Session 3: Developing scientific writing (March 10th)
During this workshop we will focus on developing scientific writing skills. Discover how scientists use writing and why it is essential that your students learn to communicate science concepts, understandings, and discoveries through the writing process. During this workshop you will explore two purposes of science writing and the performance expectations for each.
Session 4: Communicating science (April 14th)
Effective communication skills are essential to the scientific process. Scientists not only use speech to present their research findings but to explore ideas and focus their thinking. During this workshop, we will investigate methods of developing exploratory and persuasive public speaking as well as effective listening skills in your students.
Session 5: Evaluating science in the Media (May 12th)
Contradictory science claims constantly bombard us in the media. In order to make evidence-based personal decisions in today's world, students need to be able to analyze media views with healthy skepticism. We will learn practical techniques to evaluate media stories and learn methods of imparting the same skills to your students.

Register by calling (215) 299-1060.
