WINS II: The Next Phase

"The most important decisions I've made in my life stemmed from the experiences I gained in the WINS Program."

Once students have completed WINS I, they have the opportunity to pursue higher-level experiences in a second phase, called WINS II. Students may act as “explainers” in museum exhibits, or as junior interns in scientific research areas of the Academy. Some students also accept summer internships at university-based science programs nationwide. WINS staff helps the participants develop their study techniques, prepare for college entrance exams and research and apply to colleges and universities. [See WINS Colleges for a list of colleges attended by former WINS students.]

As the future of scientific discovery grows more exciting with each passing day, the WINS program at The Academy of Natural Sciences strives to correct and move beyond the historical de-emphasis of the feminine presence in scientific fields. Through the WINS program, some of Philadelphia’s most motivated and brightest young women are exposed to the fascinating world of experiential science. To date, more than 400 young women have graduated from the WINS program —an astounding number that reflects the positive contribution the WINS program is making to the young female students of Philadelphia, and the natural environment in which they live.
