Urban Sustainability Tour: Innovations in Green Intrastructure

Green infrastructure attempts to provide a more natural approach to systems typically addressed by existing gray infrastructure; or the pipes, concrete and other engineered products on the average streetscape. The Year in Review

Join us as we review Philadelphia’s progress in becoming the greenest, most livable city in America. This Urban Sustainability Forum will feature a discussion of the first year of the Greenworks plan and a special presentation revisiting projects and topics presented at previous Urban Sustainability Forums. Also, to put some perspective on Philadelphia’s efforts, there will be an update on New York’s PlanNYC.

Featuring:

  • Christine Knapp, Director of Outreach, PennFuture, will discuss the year in review.
  • Adam Freed, City Sustainability Deputy Director, New York City, PlaNYC, will report on status, obstacles, and lessons learned during the year.
  • Katherine Gajewski, Director of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia, will present a one year report on Greenworks.

Follow-Up: Science and Sustainability in the News

This Video Follow-Up contains three video clips from the May 20, 2010, Urban Sustainability Forum “Who Will Tell the People? Science and Sustainability in the News.” The program  took a look at how the media covers issues of science and sustainability, how shrinking budgets and disappearing science desks are impacting coverage, and how niche media sources are filling the void. The panel included Chris Mooney, a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT and author of three books on  public science, Beth McConnell, the Executive Director of the Media and Democracy Coalition, and Alex Mulcahy, President of Red Flag Media and Publisher of GRID magazine. The program was moderated by Sandy Shea, the Editorial Page Editor for the Daily News. (more…)

Scientists who study the environment and global warming warn us at every turn that dramatic changes are afoot. Why don’t media headlines convey a sense of urgency? What is the best way to get the climate change message to citizens? What obligations do the media have? What prevents them from telling the story?

The May Urban Sustainability Forum will take a look at how the media covers issues of science, how shrinking budgets and disappearing science desks are impacting coverage, and how niche media sources are filling a void in sharing vital information. (more…)
