A Pilsbry Purchase

Today’s Behind the Scenes photograph features the skull and horns of an Alaskan Dall sheep. Henry Pilsbry purchased the skull and horns of the Alaskan Dall sheep (Ovis dalli) for the Academy around 1903. The Dall sheep is one of two native sheep species found in North America. Dall sheep live in mountainous habitats of subarctic Alaska and in Canada in British Columbia, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.

Learn more about Henry Pilsbry and how he was also an expert malacologist.
