Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No—it’s Animal Superhero Weekend! 

How much do the superheroes of the animal kingdom inspire the superheroes (and supervillains) of comic books and movies? More than you think! From Spider-Man to Catwoman, animals influence some of our favorite characters. Explore the real-life super abilities of animals from around the world with specially themed live animal shows, activity stations, and crafts!

Animal Superhero Weekend Activities:

Auditorium Show: Animals With Bad Reputations
11 a.m.

There would be no good guys without the bad guys! But are some animal “villains” really so bad? Get to know the misunderstood creatures of the Academy in this live animal presentation, and discover how they might not be the bad guys, after all.

Auditorium Show: Super Animals, Super Skills
2:30 p.m.

What makes our animals real-life superheroes? Their super skills! Learn about amazing adaptations such as super-sight, super-strength, and super-intelligence as you meet some furry, feathery, and scaly Academy ambassadors.

Animal Inspirations

Frog-Man! Batman! Catwoman! Black Widow! Dr. Octopus! The list goes on! Learn about the real-life animals that inspire your favorite superhero (and supervillain) characters. Check out animal biofacts and touch real pelts, skulls, and teeth at this interactive education station.

Super Strength Station

Test your own strength, sight, and speed against the abilities of nature’s own superheroes. Can you jump as far as a frog or see as far as an eagle? Could you compete against the world’s fastest, smartest, or strongest animals?

Ninja Turtle Hero Mask Face Painting

“Go green” and then choose your favorite mask color to complete the look. Will you be Mikey, Raph, Leo, or Donny today?

“Turtle Power” MacroScope Cart

From pizza-loving cartoon ninjas to the real-life turtles that call the Academy home, learn all about these “heroes in a half shell” to discover how this amazing order of hard-shelled survivors lived in the past and thrives in the present. Meet live turtles and see how they measure up to the lean, green, fightin’ machines of the big and small screens!

Superhero Training Camp
1:30 p.m.

Join the superhero animals of the Academy as they hone their strength and agility as well as practice their foraging, climbing, and problem-solving skills. Meet a live mammal or reptile during this interactive presentation with an Academy animal keeper. 

Frogs: A Chorus of Colors
Through May 14

From radiant blue to fiery red, living frogs around the world offer a glimpse of the vast palette of frog diversity. Frogs are found on nearly every environment on Earth, and they have strange, shocking, and interesting survival strategies. Check out live frogs of many hues, listen to their colorful chorus, and admire the many ways they swim, hop, glide, and soar. Hop into a frog’s world as you inspect frog habitats complete with rock ledges, live plants, and waterfalls. See live frogs in action, search for hidden frogs, create a nighttime frog chorus, spin a zoetrope to see how a frog jumps, and conduct a virtual frog dissection. Special exhibit fee required.

Frog Keeper Talk
11:45 a.m.

Got some questions about frogs? Just want to learn more about how cool they are? Join a real zookeeper for a short presentation featuring the fabulous frogs of the exhibit. This special presentation is included with admission to Frogs: A Chorus of Colors.
