Insects and Spiders Day

Spiders may seem spooky to some, but they are among nature’s most amazing animals. Join us for a day featuring all things spider—and their arachnid cousins. While engaging with museum specimens, meeting live animals, and performing experiments, explore what makes arachnids, from spiders to scorpions, such interesting creatures.

  • Investigate spider webs and view different webs under the microscope.
  • Check out a unique live animal show where the beauty and intricate adaptations of spiders and insects will be magnified.
  • Investigate how scorpions glow in the dark, and see this phenomenon for yourself.
  • Make a bug box to take home.

Scouts can visit our current special exhibit, Tarantulas: Alive and Up Close, featuring a unique array of 20 live tarantulas from the more than 900 known species living all over the globe.

Watery Worlds Day

Splash into science with hands-on water experiments, meet animals that make the water their home, and learn how scientists at the Academy study our water supply. Have fun while investigating how living creatures such as diatoms and caddis flies help determine the health of an aquatic ecosystem.

  • Perform experiments to test the quality of a water sample to determine its health.
  • Peer through a microscope and marvel at the diversity of diatoms, or single-celled algae, collected from area coastal streams. Diatoms are important indicators of water quality and produce some 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe.
  • Test your scientific skills and evaluate the health of an unknown “mystery” stream.
  • Experiment with a watershed and learn how we all live downstream.

Scouts can visit our current special exhibit, Tarantulas: Alive and Up Close, featuring a unique array of 20 live tarantulas from the more than 900 known species living all over the globe.
