Joint RSC/ACS/IUPAC
Event in Cambridge, MA
300 Attendees, 20 Exhibitors, 10 Corporate Sponsors
Success of the Committee Approach and an Outstanding
Program
The 3rd Advances In Chemical Sciences
Symposium cosponsored by the RSC
USA Section, the Northeastern Section of the ACS (NESACS) and IUPAC was held in
Cambridge, MA on April 10th.
This meeting was a
huge success building on the landmark first event in 2007 and the 2008 meeting. This years meeting was again bigger in almost
everyway with over
300 attendees drawn from a diverse
range of companies and Universities in New England. In addition to the 3 organizing sponsors, 10
pharmaceutical companies made generous donations to support the meeting. The
six speakers also represented the very best of academic and industrial
chemistry.

The symposium began on a
high note with Prof. Alison Frontier, University of Rochester, speaking on "New
Twists on the Nazarov Cyclization”. She
was followed by the first of three industrial speakers, Christopher Straub of
the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research and his talk on “Sympathy for
the Devil: Taking IAP Antagonists from
Research to the Clinic”.
Prof. Scott Snyder,
Columbia University, then gave an excellent talk on "Lessons in Chemoselectivity: Total
Synthesis of Polyphenolic Natural Products".
After lunch the meeting
continued with Andreas Goutopoulos, EMD Serono, and his talk on "The
Discovery of Novel Allosteric MEK Inhibitors as Potential Anticancer Agents".
Michael Barbachyn,
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, gave an excellent overview of some of the "Challenges
in the Discovery of New Antibacterial Agents".
Prof. Melanie Sanford,
University of Michigan, ended the day with an outstanding talk on “Pd(II/IV)-Catalyzed
Reactions in Organic Synthesis”.

Introducing the symposium |
The post-meeting reception and vendor exhibition |
20 exhibitors took part in an exhibition of
goods and services of interest to organic and pharmaceutical chemists during the
afternoon coffee break and evening reception.
The opportunity to meet the exhibitors and network with friends and
colleagues was a particularly popular feature of the meeting and helped to
build a community among chemists at competing companies.
The
committee is confident that this meeting is set to become a regular feature of
the chemistry landscape in Cambridge.
There was even discussion about holding a similar meeting in the
Fall!! If you would like to volunteer to
help organize such a meeting contact any of the (Spring Meeting) Team below.
