The Library and Archives were established at the founding meeting of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1812 to support the Academy's work. The Library's primary client is the staff of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Other clients include Academy members, scientists, historians, artists, graduate students, corporations and members of the public with advanced interests in the natural world.

The mission of the Ewell Sale Stewart Library remains the provision of high quality information services in natural history subjects on a timely basis. The Library meets our clientele's information needs through a variety of Library services and Archives services utilizing our own collections, resource sharing with other libraries and accessing information available electronically.

The library is located on the second floor of the Academy of Natural Sciences museum. It's open to the public, Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Those wishing to use the library for research or to receive other library services are advised to schedule an appointment. (See Visitor Info for more information.)
