Library and Archives
The Ewell Sale Stewart Library and Archives were established at the founding meeting of the Academy of Natural Sciences in 1812 to support the Academy's work. The Library's primary clients are the scientists and staff of the Academy of Natural Sciences. Other clients include Academy members, external researchers, and members of the public with advanced interests in the natural world.
It is internationally recognized for its extraordinarily rare and historic books, journals, art, artifacts, manuscripts, photographs, and the unique papers and research of the Academy members and staff. The Library holds over 200,000 volumes dating back to the 1500s. The Archives holds well over 1 million items.
The library is located on the second floor of the Academy of Natural Sciences museum. It is open to the public by appointment. See Visitor Information for more details.
