This book by Caspar Horn (1590-1643) contains a variety of information about elephants culled from earlier authors. It also illustrates a live elephant that arrived in Europe via Amsterdam in 1629. The animal was exhibited in Germany and "seen by thousands of people" as stated on the title-page. The illustration's caption reads as follows:
"A true illustration of the elephant which in the year 1629, in the months of April and May, was seen in Frankfurt and Nuremberg."
By 1630 the elephant had traveled on to Italy, where it was drawn by the artist Bernini.
