(= Hydrosaurus pustulatus (Eschscholtz 1829))
Eschscholtz's (1793-1831) chief herpetological work described the material collected on a circumnavigation of the globe by the Russian warship, Predpriaetie. In addition to the large agamid lizard shown here, Eschscholtz provided the first descriptions of such well-known species as the sea turtle Lepidochelys olivacea (as Chelonia olivacea), and the western North American salamanders now known as Batrachoseps attenuatus, Dicamptodon ensatus, and Aneides lugubris.
