Academy Membership

Alexander Von Humboldt was nominated for membership to the Academy on December 17, 1842, and was officially elected as a corresponding member on January 31, 1843. Early Academy members John S. Phillips, Henry D. Rogers, and Samuel G. Morton signed his record of nomination and election, below.

This brief letter, written and signed by Humboldt, acknowledges his election. It reads:

"Sir -
As Vice President of the Acad. Of Nat. Sciences, have the goodness to make my sincere acknowledgements to your Society for the honor they have conferred upon me by electing me one of their associates.
