Fresh-Water Rhizopods of North America: Plate 1

This is Plate 1 in "Fresh-Water Rhizopods of North America." All of the figures belong to one species, Amoeba proteus. This species is the most widely familiar of the protozoans. European scientists had known about it for years, but confused it with other species of Amoeba. Leidy first identified it as a distinct species in 1878 and presented a detailed description in the 1879 monograph. Unlike most rhizopods, Amoeba does not have a test (shell).
