Ancient Fauna of Nebraska: Plate III

This is Plate III from "Ancient Fauna of Nebraska", 1853. All of the fossils shown belong to Merycoidodon culberstonii, an oredont mammal. The top two figures are the bottom and side views of the same skull (19 cm). The smaller figures at the bottom are teeth.
Leidy referred this animal to the genus Oreodon, a name he preferred to one he erected in 1848 on the basis of a lower jaw fragment. Subsequently, it was re-assigned to the genus Merycoidodonbased on the rule of priority in biological nomenclature.
