Ancient Fauna of Nebraska: Plate V

This lithograph is Plate V from "Ancient Fauna of Nebraska" (1853}. The top two images are side and palate views (bottom view without the jaw) of Merycoidodon culbertsonii. Its skull measures 16 cm long. The bottom row shows a top and palate view of a smaller oreodont, Merycoidodon gracilis, with a skull length of 9 cm.
Leidy referred these two animals to the genus Oreodon, a name he preferred to one he erected in 1848 on the basis of a lower jaw fragment. Subsequently, they were re-assigned to the genus Merycoidodonbased on the rule of priority in biological nomenclature.
