Ancient Fauna of Nebraska: Plate VI

This is Plate VI from "Ancient Fauna of Nebraska" (1853). Most of the specimens shown belong to Merycoidodon gracilis but the skull and teeth in the lower right belong to Merycoidodon culbertsonii.
Leidy referred these two animals to the genus Oreodon, a name he preferred to one he erected in 1848 on the basis of a lower jaw fragment. Subsequently, they were re-assigned to the genus Merycoidodonbased on the rule of priority in biological nomenclature.
