This is Plate II from the "Extinct Mammalia of Dakota and Nebraska" (1869). It shows three separate specimens of Hyaenodon crucians. The specimen at the top shows the side view of the skull and jaw. The middle specimen shows a top view of the skull. The bottom specimen shows a palatal view (bottom view without the jaw) of the skull. The gray cross-hatched material in the eye socket and beneath the back of the skull at the top is matrix (rock-like material that surrounds the fossil).
