Extinct Mammalia of Dakota and Nebraska: Plate IV

This is Plate IV from the "Extinct Mammalia of Dakota and Nebraska" (1869). All five images are of the sabertooth Hoplophoneus primaevus. The skull at the bottom of the lithograph is 15 cm long. It has very worn carnassials (flesh-shearing cheek teeth), which indicates that this skull belonged to an old individual. The skull at the top, which still has sharp edges to its carnassials, apparently belonged to a younger adult. It measures 17 cm. The three figures in the middle are jaw fragments and teeth from other individuals.
The following are other plates from "Extinct Mammalia of Dakota and Nebraska" (1869):
- Plate II: featuring Hyaenodon crucians
- Plate III: featuring Hyaenodon horridus
- Plate VI: featuring Merycoidodon culbertsonii & Merycoidodon gracilis
- Plate XVII: featuring Merychippus & Protohippus
