Digital Collections is a series of online presentations showcasing images from some of the treasures housed in the Academy's Ewell Sale Stewart Library. Many of these images came from seminal scientific publications from over the last five centuries. They document the discovery and study of new plants and animals by prominent European and American naturalists.

Joseph Leidy

Joseph Leidy

One of the great American scientists of the 19th-Century, Joseph Leidy, possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world. Best known as the Father of American Vertebrate Paleontology, he also pioneered the fields of Parasitology and Protozoology, and was the preeminent anatomist of his time. He was an influential teacher of Natural History and an expert in areas as diverse as entomology, geology and pathology.

Know Your Environment is a series of short publications designed to provide clear, scientifically-based writing on important environmental issues.  It supplies information that is timely, accurate, unbiased and understandable to a broad audience, in the hope that readers will have an improved awareness of the environment and be better able to make informed decisions on environmental questions.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson is rightly famous as the author of the Declaration of Independence and as the third president of the United States. But he was also a highly respected scholar and avid naturalist who promoted and supported paleontological studies in the earliest years of the republic.
