zebra longwing

It's a zebra longwing (Heliconius charithonia). This butterfly is normally found in southern Florida and Texas, but it will stray as far as the Carolinas and Kansas to the north and south to the Caribbean and South America. It is the state butterfly of Florida.

While most adult butterflies live for only a couple of weeks, those of the zebra longwing may live up to 3 months. The adults feed on pollen as well as nectar, which may explain their longevity.
