The Academy of Natural Sciences, American Philosophical Society, The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and Arctic Studies Center at Bowdoin College, and Philadelphia Area Center for the History of Science (PACHS) invite you to attend “North By Degree: An International Conference on Arctic Exploration, 1850-1940.”
Conference
Established and emerging scholars will present papers reporting on their new research. Discussion sessions will aim at advancing research on the history of Arctic exploration.
Conference Sessions are built around the following themes:
- Nationalism, identity, and exploration of northern regions
- Consequences of culture contact between Inuit and Westerners, and issues of race and gender on expeditions
- Technological advancements and their impact on Arctic exploration
- Increased understanding of the natural world
- Arctic exploration as reflected in popular culture
The conference program for Wednesday, May 21, will be held at the American Philosophical Society's Benjamin Franklin Hall (427 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia). Conference programs for Thursday and Friday, May 22-23, will be held at The Academy of Natural Sciences (1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway). See the Conference Schedule for more details.
The conference registration fee covers attendance at all sessions, Wednesday evening’s reception and private exhibit viewing, Thursday’s lunch, and Saturday morning’s film festival. In addition, a Thursday banquet has been partially subsidized; attendees will have to pay an additional modest fee to attend the banquet.
