<p>The Academy deposited these letters at the library of the American Philosophical Society in 1944 where they were analyzed and carded by its staff. I quote from the Society's report: &#8220;The collection consists of letters written to and from John Warner, an amateur mathematician of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, during the years 1850-1864, and numbers 255 pieces. Mr. Warner lays claim to the fact that his <emph render="italic">Studies in Organic Morphology </emph>(Philadelphia, 1857) constitute the pioneer research of that branch of science in America. The major portion of the correspondence deals with a controversy over that claim which arose when Benjamin Peirce, famous mathematician of Harvard University, after having seen Mr. Warner's studies in manuscript, read a paper on the subject before the Providence meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1855, in which he failed to give any credit to Warner. In addition to the chief topic - a charge amounting to plagiarism on the part of Prof. Peirce - the Papers contain many comments on the &#8220;Harvard clique&#8221; its influence on the AAAS, a controversy involving the administration of the Dudley Observatory in Albany, New York, and the U. S. Coast Survey.&#8221;</p>
