Letters relating to the Expedition, selected for their special interest to the Academy of Natural Sciences, mostly addressed to Mahlon Dickerson, Secretary of the Navy. Some contain reports requested by him, referring to desirable types of scientific data to be amassed by the Expedition, apparatus needed, methods of procedure, personnel, etc.
