<p>Botanist and agrostologist, non-resident member of the Academy, 1877; recording Secretary of the Botanical Section; from 1877-85 an officer of Girard College; subsequently Assistant Botanist of U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, and Chief of the Section of Vegetable Pathology. Collected extensively and wrote on grasses. Decorated by the French government for investigations on the fungus diseases of the grape.</p>
<p>Collection includes; <emph render="italic">Flora of Mt. Katahdin </emph>(publ. in Botanical Gazette, v. 17. p. 46) and catalogue of North American collection giving locality data.</p>
