<p>Naturalist and Lutheran minister of Charleston, S. C. and corresponding member of the Academy. Well known for his part in the controversy on the unity of man, which was raging among Samuel G. Morton, George R. Gliddon, Ephraim G. Squier and Joseph Clark Nott. Most famous for his joint authorship with J. J. Audubon of the illustrated folio work, <emph render="italic">Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. </emph>Papers consist of an article on the Virginia opossum and two original watercolors, a silhonette by Samuel Metford, and biographical information.</p>
