The letters are mostly addressed to Redfield, with a scattering of penciled replies, but a few are written to Thomas Meehan or Isaac Martindale. Affairs of the Botanical Section and increase of the herbarium, with correspondence of exchange and purchase of ferns for Redfield's personal collection and observations about geographical distribution of plants are treated. Acceptances and regrets for the botanical reunion held during the 1844 Philadelphia meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science are included.
