Elected a member of the Academy in 1839, Ashmead was active in its affairs for many years, being curator, member of the publication committee and auditor at various times. A Philadelphia algologist, he was closely connected with the botanical department to which he bequeathed his collection of algae. This index devotes 118 pages to the genera, followed by catalogs of algae from specialists, namely Dr. Watson, Dr. Diesing of Vienna, Dr. Tanardini of Venice and Prof. Harvey of Dublin. Lists of collections made by Ashmead and Townsend Yearsley at Beesley's Point, N. J. complete the papers.
