Born in Scotland and educated as a teacher, botanist and horticulturist, Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) moved to Philadelphia in 1807. On May 16, 1824, when Nuttall embarked at Liverpool for a trip to Boston, a young companion, Joseph Whitfield (aged sixteen, laborer), was with him. He was probably the son of Nuttall's Uncle's farmer, Thomas Whitfield, and it is likely that Joseph came to America as an assistant to Nuttall. The collection consists of 3 pencil drawings by Joseph Whitfield, accompanied by two handwritten manuscripts by Thomas Nuttall, published in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

<p>Born in Scotland and educated as a teacher, botanist and horticulturist, Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) moved to Philadelphia in 1807. A member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, he made various extensive collecting trips to the West. Later he spent some time at Harvard with Asa Gray, then returned to Scotland to occupy his family estate. </p><p>On May 16, 1824, when Nuttall embarked at Liverpool for a return trip to Boston, a young companion, Joseph Whitfield (aged sixteen, laborer), was with him. He was probably the son of Nuttall's Uncle's farmer, Thomas Whitfield, and it is likely that Joseph came to America as an assistant to Nuttall. He accompanied Nuttall on some excursions and drew illustrations for papers of Nuttall in 1825 and 1830 and for his botanical textbook, Introduction to Systematic and Physiological Botany, published in 1827.

<p>This collection consists of 3 pencil drawings by <persname encodinganalog="700" role="artist">Joseph Whitfield, </persname>accompanied by two handwritten manuscripts by Thomas Nuttall, published in the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Each drawing measures 25 x 14 cm. The subject of the drawings and manuscripts are 3 plants: Selenia aurea and Streptanthus maculatus, which were two species Nuttall had collected in the Arkansas territory; and Anemone nuttallii, which he had collected in 1811 near the confluence of the Missouri and Platte Rivers and northward. This plant ultimately proved to be a variety of Linnaeus's A. patans, viz. var. wolfangiana. </p><p>The drawings of Selenia and Streptanthus are accompanied by a three-paged, double sided, hand written paper titled: "Descriptions of two new genera of the Natural Order of the Cruciferae - by Tho. Nuttall. Read October 1825." The drawing of Anemone nuttallii is accompanied by a two-paged, double sided handwritten paper titled: "Observations on a species of Anemone of the section Pulsatilla indigenous to the United States - by Tho. Nuttall. Read October 1825." Both were published in The Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 5 (1825). </p>
