For many years connected with the Entomological Service in the U. S. National Museum he was there curator of Lepidoptera. He had two specialities, one in the larval forms of Lepidoptera and second in the biology and taxonomy of mosquitos. The letters in this collection are all addressed to Henry Skinner and deal with Lepidoptera, in relation to exchange of material and knowledge between the two entomologists.
