Scientific explorer, mineralogist, geologist, zoologist, professor at Yale University, Dana was elected a member of the Academy in 1836.

Four photographs, mounted 20 × 25 cm. the first, a photograph of West Rock, taken from a point in Westville, Conn., the other three being possibly taken at the same location. The first photograph is published as Plate 7, accompanying the Dana article in the American Journal of Science, 3d series, v. 42, 1891, p. 79-110; The four rocks of the New Haven region.
