Originally undertaken by the Committee on Library and Publications and later the joint responsibility of two departments. With the first volume of the Journal in 1817 exchanges were initiated, with the specific aim of swapping information and incidentally building an Academy library. From a few journals received 145 years ago to the nearly 2,000 now coming, the exchange of publications has been the main source of serials received. This collection contains, lists of exchange institutions from 1858 to 1941, with addresses and shipping dates; also correspondence of establishing exchanges and gifts, claims and other records.
