Student of the Diatomaceae, of New York City, Habirshaw prepared a Catalogue, with Bibliography, which was reproduced in New York, by the Edison Electric Pen process, in 1877. The work was greatly furthered by the help of his brother John Habirshaw, and prepared for publication by the instigation of Hamilton L. Smith of Hobart College. The particular copy in the Academy's Library is interleaved and bears a great many additions, bringing the whole up to 1879. These annotations are in the same hand as is the text of the 1877 edition, presumably that of the author.
