Hallowell was a Philadelphia physician who specialized in pathology and anatomy. He was also an active member of this Academy, and published 50 articles in its Proceedings, in the field of herpetology.

This collection contains notebooks and journals of travels, loose notes, bills, certificates and correspondence. Of his scientific articles published in the Proceedings, 15 are here included, 1842-54.

Gift. Purchased by Wm. S. Vaux and presented to W. Parker Foulke. His wife Julia de Vaux Foulke gave the papers back to the Hallowell family. Edward's brother Samuel donated them to the Academy in 1871.
