<p>Senator, judge, cotton planter and naturalist, he opened his home in Claiborne, Alabama to many explorers and collectors who were passing through. Elected a correspondent of the Academy in 1832, he, several times, attended courses of lectures at the Academy of Natural Sciences, as he did also in New Haven.</p>
