<p>American naturalist, son of the Philadelphian gardener John Bartram, 1699-1778. The collection includes a diary and annotations. The main contents of the diary are meteorological, especially aimed at recording growing conditions as observed in the Bartram Gardens. The period takes in the year when a black killing frost occurred in July.</p>
<p>A note &#8220;A present from my worthy friend, Thomas Hewston (i.e. Houston) M. D., etc., etc. 1808. William Bartram&#8221; is written on the flyleaf of the Academy's copy of Linne's <emph render="italic">Systema Naturae, </emph>10th ed., revised. Holmiae, 1758, v. 1, copy 2. Other annotations occurring throughout the volume are not in Bartram's hand, but possibly were made by the former owner, Thomas Houston.</p>
