<p>Naturalist, born near Constantinople, of French and German parents, living as a young man in Sicily and migrating to America in 1802, where he spent much of the remainder of his life. A prolific writer not only in the field of botany and zoology but in every line of thought and culture. Many of his flights of imagination came to nothing, only succeeding in pinning on him the name of &#8220;crack-pot&#8221;. He did propose a theory about speciation which predated Darwin's but which was much ridiculed in his day. He married in Sicily and had one daughter, Emilia, whose letters from Algiers are listed in this collection under the author's name of Emilia Rafinesque Winston. Once a professor at Transylvania College, member of the Academy of Natural Sciences but preeminently a collector, always looking for new species. Our
