The first series of volumes, “Fungorum Nieskiensium Icones” is incomplete in this library. Years ago Eugene A. Rau stated that he had seen seven volumes, but for years his statement was doubted. In 1903, July 24, George E. de Schweinitz presented vols. 2, 3 and 5 to the Academy. In 1913, Mrs. W. A. Lemly (Emily de Schweinitz Lemly) donated vol. 1 to this library, a copy which had been in her possession at Winston-Salem.

For some time it was thought that v. 4 was at the herbarium of the University of Michigan. The volume there had once been the property of John E. LeConte then sold to B. M. Eberhart of West Chester, Pennsylvania, later purchased by a Dr. Kelly and eventually given to Michigan. However, a recent letter from the Director, E. B. Mains, of the University herbarium describes this volume and it is definitely not a part of the same series as that owned by the Academy. Correspondence of John L. LeConte who inherited John E. LeConte's library indicated that this volume was probably the one which John E. LeConte had paid Schweinitz to duplicate for him. More recently information came to us that now in the possession of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, are vols. 4, 6, and 7. A letter from the librarian states that they have v. 4 (pls. 274-349) only and know nothing of any others. Our volumes contain pls. 1-273, 350-453 (except no. 33, 40, 44, 45, 46, 47, 50, 51 which were omitted in enumeration and not included in the volume's index).

A portfolio contains 81 loose plates unsigned and undated with one exception. This exception bears Schweinitz initials in pencil with the date of 1805.

Another small drawing, has the remnants of Schweinitz name in pencil which has been roughly erased. Only a small number of the loose plates portray fungi, but C. Earle Smith, Jr., has identified those as referring to fungi of Salem, N. C. The remainder deal with higher plants.
