A group of letters written to the famous mycologist, by American and European botanists. The collection was renovated and indexed by Willman Spawn, in 1939 and 1940. Spawn's index is typed by volumes and the contents of each inserted therein. In 1950 Joseph Ewan annotated Spawn's index, and later Barnhart's notations were added (in red). See Bartonia 16: 19-36. A calendar of the letters, prepared by F. W. Pennell, concludes the collection.

Gift, in part (131 letters) from Miss A. L. Fries of Winston-Salem, N. C. and donated to the Academy through the courtesy of Stewardson Brown, 1913. Another lot of 104 letters presented by Schweinitz' “grandson Dr. George de Schweinitz July 23, 1903”; a third lot of 111 letters from the estate of George E. de Schweinitz, Oct. 19, 1938.
