<p>Jessup scholar at the Academy, high school instructor and Director of the Reading Museum and Art Gallery, his scientific interests were in vertebrate zoology, while his cultural expression is in design and illustration of natural history subjects. Accompanied the Academy's Expedition to Guatemala and British Honduras and is presently a research associate of the Dept. of Birds. This collection includes 5 large pen and ink plates named as follows: 1. Eastern Sparrow Hawk, 2. Opossum, 3. The Virginia deer, 4. Woodchuck, 5. Hawks,<note>

Of his writings we have, &#8220;A list of Birds of Berks County, Collected by Dr. Mengel and Donated to the Reading Museum,&#8221; prepared by Mr. Poole in 1916, 5 p. typescript, and ** His letters in our collection number 36, dated 1915-37, dealing with ornithological topics in general, giving at various times, descriptions and even sketches, in pencil or water color, of the birds he discusses with his correspondent, Witmer Stone. A few biographical items round out the collection.</p>
