<p>Lacking the title-page, one can only assume by various physical characteristics, that this volume may be the 1630 edition. The <emph render="italic">Krauterbuch </emph>was published in a great many editions, but only when it was revised and published jointly with Peter Uffenbach in 1630 was it enlarged to 750 pages, the number which was originally in this volume. It now lacks p. 177-652 and is also very badly insect eaten. The appendix bound at the back, is written in old German script by an unidentified writer. It could very well be a doctor or pharmacist's recipe book describing the use of the plants for medicinal purposes. Included in the subject matter are trees, shrubs, hedges, farm crops, aromatics and herbs-followed by dissertations on birds, and fish, metals, gums, syrups, etc.</p>
<p>The book was handed to the Academy's librarian by John E. Bowers in 1949 who said that it had been stored in the office safe for years. Neither he nor C. M. B. Cadwalader knew anything about its origin. A label which has been inserted in the book was typed on a machine which the Exhibits Dept. purchased in 1936, but Green cannot remember having displayed this book in any special exhibit at the Academy.</p>
