Historian, minister of the gospel and amateur naturalist, Chamberlain assembled a collection of Eocene fossils which he bequeathed to the Academy in memory of Isaac Lea, his father-in-law, and Frances Lea Chamberlain, his wife. The papers here refer to both the “Isaac Lea Collection” and the fund for its maintainence which is called the “Frances Lea Chamberlain Fund.” A series of ten letters written during Chamberlain's lifetime about the collection is dated, 1894-1897 and written by Chamberlain, Dall, Nolan and Willcox. A longer series chiefly concerned with the “Frances Lea Chamberlain Fund” pertains to the arrangement of the transfer of Chamberlain's legacy to the Academy. All letters are arranged chronologically. A copy of the will is kept, dated September 28, 1915.
