<p>Gardener, collector, botanist and artist, Ehret was more generally known for his collaboration with Linnaeus in preparing the <emph render="italic">Hortus Cliffortianus </emph>than for any other one accomplishment. He traveled Europe, visiting gardens and often supervising them, thus becoming known to many in high places whose patronage he enjoyed throughout his life. Referred to as a great botanical draughtsman, he also taught botany and botanical drawing to the &#8220;highest nobility&#8221; of England. After publishing a good deal in botanical journals, and illustrating Brown's <emph render="italic">Natural History of Jamaica, </emph>he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1757. The two watercolors in our collection show great imagination in combining the insects with decorative handling of the plants involved. [In Marshal's Illustrations of insects, <emph render="italic">Coll. 941, </emph>pl. 54, 55.]</p>
