<scopecontent>
<p>On October 1, 1891, a rorqual whale was cast up on the beach at Ocean City, New Jersey, was photographed by Joseph P. Remington and later described by E. D. Cope. This skeleton, along with other type specimens of whales occupied a great deal of space in the Academy and in 1951 it was planned to transfer them to some other museum in the United States. The present documents consist of 5 photographs and 37 letters. The latter constitute
the correspondence carried on by the director H. Radclyffe Roberts about the transfer which was finally consumated in 1960.</p>
