<p>The author made a trip from Philadelphia to Georgetown, S. C. between December 30, 1833 and February 17, 1834. Zimmermann's biographer, H. A. Hagen states: &#8220;He made the trip, according to the custom of German
students, on foot, a knapsack on his shoulders and a few dollars in his pocket. This journey of 713 miles, in the midst of severe winter, and attended with much hardship.... was made in 50 days, with $27.00 in cash, six dollars credit, three maps, one book and a pocket-knife.&#8221; A journal account of this expedition including a description of a visit to E. F. Melsheimer at Hanover, Pa. was sent to Hermann Burmeister, February 18, 1834. A genealogy of Melsheimer and an abbreviated itinerary is contained. The trip took the scientist through Dowingstown(!), Coatesville, Columbia, York, Hanover, Pa., Emmitsville, Md., Baltimore, Bladenburg, Washington, Alexandria, Occaquan, Richmond in Virginia and over the Roanoke River to Warrenton, N. C., Raleigh, thence to Marion Court House, S. C. and Georgetown. In <emph render="italic">Coll. 915.</emph></p>
