Born in Glenview, Kentucky on August 19, 1921, Robert Mengel, biologist and wildlife artist, taught himself to draw by studying his subjects and the work of other artists. This collection of Mengel's work consists of 1069 items, including 430 watercolors, 349 graphite drawings and sketches, 255 ink drawings, 13 oil paintings, 10 mixed media items, 7 charcoal drawings, 2 grease pencil drawings and 3 pastels. A complete representation of Robert Mengel's growth and versatility as an artist, containing Mengel's art work from the age of 6 until the end of his career, the collection includes juvenilia, art work done at Mengel's leisure, studies done while studying with George Miksch Sutton, drawings done during Mengel's army time in Libya, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, and original illustrations for various books and publications (including The Birds of Kentucky and the Handbook of North American Birds). Artwork consists mainly of birds, but also includes other animals, landscapes and portraits.
Born in Glenview, Kentucky on August 19, 1921, Mengel, biologist and wildlife artist, was raised by his mother until her death in 1934, when he was taken in by an aunt. Both his mother and aunt encouraged his ornithological and artistic interests, and Mengel also found a father figure and ornithological mentor, Burt Leavelle Monroe, Sr. (1901-1968), who eventually served as president of the Kentucky Ornithological Society, as well as the Wilson Ornithological Society. Monroe took him under his wing and spent many after school hours furthering his exuberance and education in wildlife.
Receiving no formal training in art, Mengel taught himself to draw by studying his subjects and the work of other artists. He greatly admired the work of Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927), and while spending his undergraduate years at Cornell, established a life-long friendship with George Miksch Sutton (1928-1982), who had been a student of Fuertes. "So strong was the Fuertes/Sutton influence on Mengel during his undergraduate years at Cornell that his paintings of the period grew uncannily similar to theirs. Were they not signed and dated, some of Mengel's watercolor studies from 1940 and 1941 might easily be attributed to his mentor" (Peck 346).
Mengel joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and was later assigned to Airways Communications in the Middle East. He spent 21 months in Libya, Egypt, and what is now the United Arab Emirates. Although birds were scarce in these areas, Mengel managed pursue his interests, and organized some of his watercolors from the Middle East as an informal field guide to the birds he had seen there. He also did many drawings of his fellow soldiers and miltary installations that show his versatiltiy as an artist.
At the close of WWII, Mengel returned to Cornell to complete his undergraduate degree, then pursued his master's and doctoral degrees in zoology at the Unversity of Michigan. In 1953, Mengel took a half-time position at the University of Kansas, cataloging the library's recently acquired collection of rare ornithological books: the Ralph N. Ellis collection. Mengel completed The Birds of Kentucky in 1962, after 11 years of work, and then began working on illustrations for the American Ornithologists' Union's four-volume Handbook of North American Birds, which was fully published in 1988. Mengel was Curator of Birds and Professor of Biological Science at the University of Kansas. He has been editor of the Auk and of the AOU Monogaphs, and has illlustrated many papers in The Auk, Condor, the Wilson Bulletin and The Living Bird, as well as writing numerous scientific papers and two major books. His abilities as an author and artist were brought together in his paper, "Beauty and the Beast: Natural History and Art" in The Living Bird in 1980.
This collection consists of 1069 items measuring 63 x 75 cm. or smaller: 430 watercolors; 349 graphite drawings and sketches; 255 ink drawings; 13 oil paintings; 10 mixed media items; 7 charcoal drawings; 2 grease pencil drawings; 3 pastels. In addition, many images which Mengel had sold or given away are represented with photocopies or color reprints. The collection is a complete representation of Robert Mengel's growth and versatility as an artist, containing Mengel's art work from the age of 6 until the end of his career. This finding aid only includes the 343 oversized items in the collection.
Items include juvenilia, studies done while studying with George Miksch Sutton, drawings done during Mengel's army time in Libya, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, and original illustrations for various books and publications (including The Birds of Kentucky and the Handbook of North American Birds). Drawings consist mainly of birds, but also include other animals, landscapes and portraits (including several portraits of soldiers he worked with while in the Army).
The collection also includes Mengel's cumulation of art work by other artists: 3 watercolors and 1 graphite drawing by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, 2 ink drawings and 1 graphite drawing by Francis Lee Jaques, 2 watercolors by E.A.R. Ennion, 2 watercolors by Allan Brooks, single ink drawings by George Miksch Sutton, Colleen Helgeson Nelson, R.S.
