<p>French entomologist who was connected with the Mus&#233;um National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris for many years, the first president of the Soci&#233;t&#233; entomologique de France and in his right publisher of many articles in the field of entomology. He described specimens from various collections sent to Paris from all over the world. Latreille made the plates for his own writings on crustaceans, arachnids and insects. Also he did many of the illustrations for Cuvier's great work and it is believed that the original drawings found in our volume were prepared for Cuvier.</p>
<p>The two volumes of plates of his Histoire Naturelle des Insectes Tableau which we have, appeared as the <emph render="italic">Encyclopedie Methodique, Insectes, </emph>a work of 397 plates. In the second volume are inserted 73 original ink sketches of the plates which follow immediately after them. Also a great many annotations, additions and names are written in by Latreille. The volumes concerned belong to a set that was donated to the American Entomological Society by George H. Horn, who in turn got them from John L. LeConte's library. LeConte probably obtained the books when on a trip to Paris.</p>
<p>The volumes almost certainly once belonged to Latreille. The published facsimile of his handwriting which appears in <emph render="italic">Jardine's Naturalists' Library, </emph>vol. 32, part 5, p. 17-60, 1852, page 60, matches. A letter with photostatic copies of some of the drawings and annotations was sent to M. Lucien Chopard in Paris in 1959 and a group of the Museum staff reported that the notes were indeed in the hand of Latreille.</p>
