Terence Michael Shortt, artist and ornithologist, was born in 1911. He joined the scientific staff of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where he participated in major expeditions across the globe. The majority of this collection contains Shortt's 28 field sketchbooks which include thousands of pencil and watercolor sketches of birds, other animals, landcapes, people, insects and flora interspersed with Shortt's anecdotes and quotes (1925-1981). Shortt's sketchbooks represent travels in Canada, the southwestern desert, Eastern Shore, and Alaska in the United States, England, The Galapagos Islands, Mexico, South America, Trinidad and Tobago, India, the West Indies, Burma, Thailand, Japan, and Africa. In smaller quantity, the collection includes just over 100 photographs, snapshots, and slides of Shortt, his wife (Audrey Bell Shortt), co-workers, expeditions, and dioramas. Also included in the collection are about 84 watercolors, pencil drawings, cartoons, Christmas cards, and oil paintings not associated with Shortt's sketchbooks.

<bioghist>
<p>Terence Michael Shortt, artist and ornithologist, was born in 1911 in Winnipeg, Canada, to an artist mother and an outdoorsman father. He began to paint birds almost as soon as he could hold a brush. After several years at art school and short stints as a commercial artist (drawing fashions for a mail order catalog) and a bank clerk in Winnipeg, he joined the scientific staff of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where he spent the following 46 years. Here he was responsible for design and construction of dioramas and exhibitions. Shortt explains that his job required him "to be a jack of all trades: illustrator, background painter, accessory maker, taxidermist, field collector, label writer, public speaker, docent, business manager, moulder and caster, purchasing agent, inventor, floor sweeper, etc."</p>

<p>Shortt began his official explorations for ROM with a series of comprehensive collecting trips through western and northern Ontario. While on these trips, Shortt also developed his skills as an artist, making hundreds of pencil sketches of the wildlife he saw. The drawings served as invaluable visual resources from which he could draw ideas and information for book illustrations, museum displays, and paintings, which he finished at a later date. </p>

<p>In 1938 Shortt was invited by the Canadian government to serve as official ornithologist on its Eastern Arctic Patrol aboard the Hudson's Bay Company ship Nascopie. Collecting expeditions increased in number and frequency as he began to develop a series of dioramas. As his artistic reputation grew, so did opportunities for travel. He soon added expeditions to Mexico, Trinidad, Tobago, Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, India, Thailand, Burma, Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Madagascar and the Seychelles to his experience. By the time of his retirement from the Musuem in 1976, he had probably seen and sketched from life more species of the world's birds than any other artist. </p>

<p>Terence married Audrey Bell in August 1939 and they honeymooned with binoculars and sketchpad through the parklands of Arizona and New Mexico. Audrey accompanied her husband on many subsequent trips as well. </p>

<p>Many contemporary artists and critics consider Shortt's field sketches to be
 masterworks. Fellow artist Barry Kent McKay reminisced: "He could take a pencil and a scrap of paper, and with a minimum of deft pencil strokes, capture the exact essence of a bird's features and attitude. . . without error or correction." In addition to his own artistic abilities, Shortt played a role in the development of many artistic careers, including those of Robert Bateman and J. Fenwick Landsdowne. Roger Tory Peterson has stated: "Canada, in proportion to its population, has perhaps more first-rate bird artists than any other English-speaking country. This is largely because of one man: Terry Shortt, the dean of them all, who inspired and gave generously of his time to every talented youngster who haunted the halls of the Royal Ontario Museum." </p>

<p>Shortt died in Toronto from heart problems at the age of 75, December 1986.

<c01 level="series"><did><unittitle>805A: Illustrated Field Sketchbooks </unittitle></did><scopecontent><p>Shortt made some thirty collecting expeditions to every corner of the globe for specimens. On these trips he filled 28 sketchbooks ranging in date from <unitdate type="inclusive">1925-1981. </unitdate>The bulk are from <unitdate type="bulk">1962-1976. </unitdate>The sketchbooks contain pencil drawings, watercolors, pen sketches, notes, and reproductions of Shortt's work. The notes interspersed with drawings include anecdotes, quotations, poetry, and bird observations. Reproductions can include photocopies, photographs, Polaroids, postcards, magazine or book prints of Shortt's drawings. The subjects represented in Shortt's drawings are birds, reptiles, rodents, other animals, landscapes, individual flowers, trees and shrubs, native people, friends and coworkers of Shortt. Animals other than birds, reptiles and rodents can include elephants, giraffe, zebra, deer, alligators, hippopotami, tiger, lions, water buffalo, wart hogs, and a variety of native animals. </p>

<p>Shortt cut up each sketchbook, removing the spiral metal binding, and trimmed the photocopies of his paintings that were included in most of the sketchbooks so they would fit. Many sketches were made on odds and ends (bristol board, charcoal board, scratch paper) that had been thrown out of various departments of the Royal Ontario Museum, which he would trim to fit into his sketchbooks. </p>

<p>Most of the sketches are assigned a name and location by Shortt, and some are dated. Few of the pencil sketches are signed, while most of the watercolors are signed. His pencil sketches often include notes on the various colors or anatomical features of the birds. Some sketches contain short to lengthy narration on the verso or recto. </p>

<p>Items that were originally with the sketchbooks but are too large to remain there without suffering damage are housed separately in box 6, and cataloged individually at the end of the sketchbooks. </p>
